Aboard the Arabella: Widowmaker photo ops
Caribbean, Cruises — By Chris on April 25, 2010 at 3:35 pmFor sheer drama, it’s hard to beat a seat on a ship’s bowsprit, especially with the wind in your hair and turquoise water below.
The Arabella’s bowsprit – also known as a “widowmaker” because many sailors lost their lives tending sails from the formerly treacherous perch – was the place for passengers to test their fortitude and get that perfect Christmas card, “I’m king of the world” Titanic shot.
I ventured out with shaky legs, but quickly realized that falling would be almost impossible. Besides catching more wind – a welcome feeling during our hot and humid days – the bowsprit allowed great views of the rest of the ship. My husband Don especially liked using his fisheye lens out there.
Some daring folks jumped into the water from the bowsprit during our free swimming times. I wasn’t quite that adventurous. We agreed that it would be great if the ship added a swing or plank out there, so we could truly feel like pirates!
