Berlin Festival of Lights

Planning a fall visit to Berlin? You might want to check out the city’s Festival of Lights. Here’s some photos from our 2010 trip.

We were in luck this week that our visit to Berlin coincided with the city’s annual Festival of Lights.

Now in its sixth year, the Festival features colorful light shows on more than 60 landmarks, hotels and other buildings during a two-week period in October.

The festival seemed popular with tourists and locals alike. On a drizzly Friday night, Unter den Linden – the city’s grand boulevard in the former East Berlin – was packed with people toting cameras, setting up tripods or strolling around enjoying the spectacle.

On our first night, we stayed at the Sofitel on the pretty Gendarmenmarkt. I enjoyed the view from the hotel room while my husband Don (who took all of these photos) fussed around with his camera in the square….

…..as well as the French Dom.

Reichstag at night, Berlin, Germany

We wandered down to the Reichstag, the German Parliament building, one night, as we were certain that it too would be bathed in color. For some reason, it’s not included in the Festival. But it looks purdy at night anyway with its glass-topped dome, dontcha think?

The Brandenberg Gate had the most crowds, of course. The most famous symbol of Berlin looks impressive….

….no matter what the color. The festival runs through Oct. 24.

This looks so fun. I love Berlin anyway and catching it during this festival looks like it would make the trip all the better.

Kelsi – The lights were fantastic, and it was great to see all the people out, taking them in. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

I saw all these buildings a few weeks earlier, but this is most impressive. I wish I had been with you after Leipzig — these photos are gorgeous.
