Photo Friday: Hotel Pools

by Chris on August 3, 2012

This week’s Photo Friday looks at treats – and nothing spells heaven to me than free time spent by the pool.

This is the latest in a series of travel photos inspired by #FriFotos on Twitter.

Hotel pool at the Four Seasons Los Angeles in Beverly Hills

This week’s Photo Friday theme is TREATS. It took me a while to think about what I consider my favorite travel treat. Your first instinct is to think about food. I have a big sweet tooth and nothing makes me happier than eating gelato in Italy or having a piece of red velvet cake in the South. But sometimes the guilt that follows such an indulgence isn’t all that delicious.

Then I considered spa services. Massages, facials, mani-pedis, I love them all. Nothing makes me happier than trying a signature treatment. But since I’ve started work as a travel writer, I’m always thinking of how the services stack up against others, and whether they are worth the money for my readers. Not so relaxing.

Pool at Tres Rios, Mexico

Finally, I realized that a true treat for me is the gift of time, preferably spent by a beautiful hotel pool. I love lying on a lounge chair, a pile of trashy gossip and fashion magazines stacked next to me. Add an umbrella for shade, a diet coke or a fruity drink served by a smiling attendant, a gorgeous crowd for people watching – and I’m one happy camper. (While many people think this is all that travel writers do, I’m here to tell you that my free time is so limited that spending an hour doing nothing at the pool can be a slice of heaven).

Pool at the Mena House, Giza

(Quick shoutout to Giza’s Mena House, which was my favorite hotel in 2011. After touring all day in the blazing heat, a late afternoon pool session felt amazing – and the crowd, mostly wealthy couples and families from other Arab countries, were fascinating to watch. Treat, indeed).

Love the photos. Hotel pools are always nice to admire, specially when you are right there, next to the pool.

I got yelled at by friends on Facebook during our Belize Honeymoon for posting so many photos of luxury hotel pools (“Get out of the hotel and see the country!”) but I am such a sucker for them. Art!
