This is the latest in a series of travel photos inspired by #FriFotos on Twitter.
This week’s Photo Friday theme is CLOSE UP. A handful of years ago, Chris and I attended the Philadelphia Flower Show. And while I enjoy gazing at flowers like most people, I wasn’t quite sure how I’d like going to an all-out flower fest at the convention center. (Chris: Yeah, I knew it was a hard sell. I went a few years earlier with my mom and sister, and had a wonderfully girly time). I couldn’t spend all day there, but I did find all the odd arrangements and exotic flower species fascinating, in addition to being great photography subjects.
During the day, I happened upon an area dedicated to a large display of orchids – some common types you’d find in the grocery store and other types resembling spiders or alien life forms. The orchid pictured above caught my attention. It looked as though it was covered in a thin layer of burgundy-colored velour with contrasting white and yellow – even the petals were fuzzy. So, I got my camera in close enough to capture the detail in the main flower – an orchid signature – and surrounding petals.
(Chris: Don is being modest here. He’s actually quite good with flower photos. Close up shots like this one require a lot of patience, as well as a very steady hand. And he’s now open to going to horticultural events because of the photo opportunities. Over the years, I’ve dragged him to Longwood Gardens, the National Arboretum and a plant hike in Costa Rica. I would guess that he’d even go back to the Flower Show again, if we were in Philadelphia when it was happening).
The 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show will be held March 2-March 10, at the PA Convention Center.
