December 2012 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper: Franz Josef Glacier Walk

Get your December 2012 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper! This photo was taken in November 2011, during our RV trip around the South Island of New Zealand. I’m not a cold weather fan – too many winters in Minnesota burned the snow lover out of me long ago – but Don saw the offering for glacier walks through Franz Josef Glacier Guides and wanted to give it a try.

We signed up for the half-day adventure (which doesn’t seem to be offered by the company any more). It involved a surprising amount of gear for an amateur adventure: jackets, boots, socks, crampons. We were also told NOT to take our wallets, cell phones or keys.

Whenever I’m faced with excessive preparations like this, I tend to second guess the decision to go in the first place. I’m a fan of “soft adventure,” and it’s not a coincidence that the adjective refers to my mid-section. Was there something in the brochure that I missed?

Turns out there wasn’t. While the hike to the glacier itself annoyed some people (“bloody hell, that’s a ways away,” a Brit next to me complained), I enjoyed the vistas of New Zealand’s Southern Alps spread in front of me. Scrambling through the crevasses turned out to be more like playing on an ice playground than real exercise. Turns out that I’m a fan of crampons; while I’m probably not a candidate to go ice climbing, a simple walk on a glacier can be exhilarating.

Beautiful, I love the blue color of the ice – pretty neat knowing that the ice you’re walking on was frozen many thousands of years ago!

Hi Chris,

This is a beautiful picture. I’ll use it for my iPad, at least this will make me think I’m in winter season.

I’m from Mexico and I think this year we are having a warm Christmas. 🙁

Anyway thanks for sharing! 🙂

Chris, I have to agree with you, the preparations did seem a bit overkill. I visited Franz Josef in 2010 and I couldn’t believe how organized everything was, especially after coming from South America where it was possible to simply walk up to a glacier without anyone even knowing that you were there. But admittedly, Franz Josef still offered a great walk through the fields of the tall ice waves… 🙂
