This month’s desktop calendar wallpaper features a water lily floating in a pond on the grounds of the Four Seasons at Manele Bay in Lanai, Hawaii.

January 2013 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper: Pond Lily - Lanai, HI

Get your February 2013 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper!  I took this photo of a water lily pond at the Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay. We were on Lanai because Chris had been invited to participate in the island’s  inaugural New Media in Residence Program (it’s now in its third year). It was my first time in Hawaii, Chris’s fourth.

The hotel, which overlooks the ocean, has several gardens, each with a theme. When Chris was at her massage, I wandered around with my camera to get some shots (I’m a fan of flower photos).  At the Kama’aina Garden, I noticed the lily pads and flowers.  I crouched down to get a low angle, zoomed in to the flower and shot away.

Photo tip: If you are zooming in on a subject like this, make sure you position yourself low to the ground so the camera can be as steady as possible. Otherwise, use a tripod if you have one with you. I was able to take this photo by hand, but a tripod would have made it easier. Keep composition rules such as the Rule of Thirds in mind; as you can see, the flower in the shot is not directly in the middle but off to the side.

Very nicely done!!

I need to work on my photography skills (which are non-existent), what type of a camera do you use?

Hi Faisal,

I use a Nikon D700. You could take this with practically any camera – the main thing that helped out on this shot is the compostion and the fact that I has a circular polarizer on my lens at the time to cut down on some of the glare and bump the saturation a bit. Other than that, I increased the detail of photo with editing software, so the edges of the lilly pads and the lilly itself popped.

Great desktop wallpaper! It looks really soothing. When you have a travel site, it really helps if you’re good in taking photos. I know I need to upgrade my photography skills. :)

I love waterlillies. So hard to take pictures of them as they are usually not close enough to land for my lens.
